As a new teacher of the month at Hempstead ISD, she received a #risktaker t-shirt donated by MaBisha Stubblefield (Bisha’s Bling), a Mary Kay gift bag donated by Jackie Craver and a certificate to display in her room.

“Mrs. Cardozo is always looking for new ways to motivate her students,” said Consuelo Yamaguchi, Bilingual/ESL and Testing Coordinator. “She incorporates literature and projects from other courses and collaborates with other teachers to make her instruction more relevant.” Yamaguchi went on to say, “Some students volunteer to be in her class as Spanish tutors instead of being in breaks or having free time, which shows that her learning environment is motivating and engaging. She always participates in professional development sessions (required and not required) and exhibits a great attitude.”

Cardozo is a new teacher at Hempstead High School who currently teaches Spanish 2, 3 & 4-AP. “Ms. Cardozo seeks out professional development to grow professionally,” said Melissa Skinner, HISD Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction. “She is always smiling and looking for new ideas to create a successful environment for her high school students. We are happy she joined our HISD team! ”

Cardozo, originally from Caracas, Venezuela, earned her degree in journalism and literature from the
University of the Andes in Mérida, Venezuela. She taught Spanish literature in Venezuela before moving to the United States. Prior to coming to Hempstead, Cardozo taught Special Ed at Cypress Woods High School for six years.

In her spare time, Cardozo loves to read and spend time with her two daughters and her dog, Stewie. “My oldest daughter lives in Wisconsin and my youngest lives in Austin, so it’s always fun to visit them,” she said. Her favorite book is One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez. She also enjoys practicing yoga.

“I am very grateful to have the opportunity to work in Hempstead ISD and for begin chosen as teacher of the month for April,” said Cardozo. “This first year I have learned a lot, especially from the students. I want to continue learning from them and sharing my knowledge of not only the Spanish language, but the culture as well.”
