Aneth Anaya and Maria Galvan were recognized at the April school board meeting for being the first students, since the inception of cosmetology at Hempstead High School last year, to take and pass the written state exam.

Both students were very excited to be the first to have this opportunity. “It feels truly amazing to be the first students at HHS to pass the written exam of cosmetology and to complete the program,” said Aneth. “The thought of graduating from high school and becoming a licensed cosmetologist all at once, in just a few weeks is phenomenal! I am extremely thankful for this opportunity and for all who made it possible.”
Maria said, “The feeling of being able to have a career straight out of high school is an unexplainable amount of joy. I fully recommend this program to those who seek a career in the beauty industry! You learn so much because it's an on hands experience, and the instructors and everybody treat you like family. I am so very grateful to have been given this chance!”

To be a licensed Cosmetologist in Texas, students must pass both a written exam and a practical exam. Aneth and Maria took and passed the written exam in Houston on April 12.

“I’m so proud of these ladies,” said Dr. Angela Gutsch, Superintendent of Schools. “They are just the first of many to come, and they are going to be able to get out into the work force and start working immediately after graduation.”

Before recognizing the students, Dr. Gutsch recognized Zelda Moore, owner of Evvaylois (formerly known as Edvance School of Beauty) for helping bring a cosmetology class to the students at Hempstead High School.

Hempstead ISD is on its second year of transporting students two times each day to Evvaylois in Brenham to participate in the cosmetology program at Hempstead High School. Hempstead ISD is working hard to prepare all students for college or a career path upon graduation.
