Maria Huerta Recognized as Secondary New Teacher of the Month at HISD

As a new teacher of the month at Hempstead ISD, she received a #risktaker t-shirt donated by MaBisha Stubblefield (Bisha’s Bling), a Mary Kay gift bag donated by Jackie Craver and a certificate to display in her room.

“I nominated Maria Huerta for Teacher of the Month because she has been able to inspire our Math Models students to really be engaged in Mathematics,” said Secondary Math Coach Cyndi Dull. “She has really embraced her assignment to help students who have struggled in math to like math again and to really be engaged in relevant real life math activities.”

According to Dull, one example of her work is that she is teaching students the connection between math and music. Students even created their own instruments and these instruments and are on display at the high school. In addition, students created tiny houses using proportional reasoning and scaling. These tiny houses can also be seen displayed at the high school. “Maria is an excellent addition to the high school math department,” said Dull.

Huerta is a new teacher at Hempstead High School who currently teaches Math Models with Application. “Ms. Huerta brings math alive for our high school students with her hands-on activities,” said Melissa Skinner, HISD Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction. “She plans engaging lessons and the students have fun while learning difficult concepts,” said Skinner. “We are thrilled to have Ms. Huerta join the HISD team. ”

Huerta, a Hempstead High School graduate from the Class of 2008 and 2015 Prairie View A&M University alumni, wanted to come back to her roots. She was excited to be able to do her student teaching at Hempstead High School in Spring 2015 under Anthony Borski. Prior to coming to Hempstead, Huerta was at Sealy ISD for two years working as a teacher aide and then a librarian assistant.

Pankratz said she felt honored to receive the award. “Ms. Pankratz has a unique drive that is contagious amongst colleagues and students,” said Stephanie Piper, the K-12 Science Coach. “She is so very willing to go the extra mile on all that she takes on. Great things are expected in the biology classroom this year with the help of the incredibly talented Ms. Pankratz.”

Pankratz is a new teacher at Hempstead High School who teaches Biology. “Ms. Pankratz wants to make science fun for her students,” said Melissa Skinner, HISD Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction. “We are so glad she joined the Hempstead ISD Team!”

Pankratz is a graduate of Texas A&M University-Kingsville and she earned her masters at The University of Texas at Dallas. Prior to taking a teaching position, she worked as a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Analyst.

In her spare time, Pankratz enjoys knitting, tie-dyeing and hiking.
