Students Enjoy Farmer's Market at HES
Students at Hempstead Elementary had the opportunity to experience a Farmer’s Market during lunchtime on Thursday, April 13.

Jeff Spaulding, Director of Nutrition & Dining Services from Livingston ISD, assisted Crystal Whitelow, Director of Nutrition & Dining Services at Hempstead ISD, with the event.

The Farmer’s Market consisted of a table display of common fruits and vegetables that the students would see in the Hempstead area markets along with some not so common ones including the star fruit and rainbow carrots.

As students came by the market, they were allowed to ask questions as well as take samples to enjoy with their daily lunch.

“This is great,” said first grade teacher Vera Cleveland. “We just finished studying a unit on the Farmer’s Market in Social Studies where the students learned about producers and consumers.”

Hempstead ISD partners with Southwest Foodservice Excellence to provide cafeteria/food services for the district and participates in the School Breakfast and National School Lunch Program.

The district also participates in the Community Eligibility Program (CEP) which allows ALL students at the Hempstead Elementary/Pre-K campus to eat free lunch and breakfast each day.

Grab-n-Go Breakfast Option at HHS/HMS
Food Services rolled out a new “Grab–n–Go” concept at the high school/middle school cafeteria for breakfast on September 28th. Students are able to grab breakfast, drinks, fruit and other items outside on their way to class.

This effort has expanded the existing breakfast program, and gives students an opportunity to not miss breakfast, and not be late for class. We had a record high of 140 breakfasts served on Thursday the 29th. We are excited to continue this “no kid hungry” initiative!
