On Tuesday, June 21, Markeith Wesley, the new Hempstead ISD athletic director/head football coach, met with middle and high school student-athletes and their families. Students, parents, and community members filled the Bobcat Den to hear from Wesley for the first time.
Wesley, a Navasota native, remembered his time as a young athlete. He recounted what it felt like to have a sense of pride in his school and community. His goal is to create that pride within the athletics programs, and hopes that it will spread throughout the district and community.
“It will take all of us, students, administrators, teachers, parents, and the community, to build a successful athletics program,” Wesley explained.
Wesley’s motto is “All In” because it will take the entire district and community to create a sense of pride for Hempstead ISD.
Throughout the meeting, he spoke about moving the athletics program forward, providing families in attendance with student-athlete expectations and expectations for his coaching staff.
“I believe in graduating students. We are here to win more than games. We are here to impact the lives of student-athletes and help mold them into successful men and women.”
Additionally, Wesley spoke about different opportunities for the student-athletes to be more involved with the community, through service projects and partnering with the elementary school to build excitement about Bobcat Nation.
Wesley closed the meeting by thanking those in attendance and encouraging them to continue supporting the students and the program as they rebuild.
