The week of October 14-18 is National School Lunch Week (NSLW). NSLW was created in 1962 by President John F. Kennedy. It is a weeklong national observance of events and activities designed to promote the benefits of the National School Lunch Program (NSLP). The week recognizes the importance of a healthy school lunch in a child’s life, and the impact it has inside and outside of the classroom.
For National School Lunch Week, Southwest Foodservice (SFE) will be raising awareness, promoting the healthy menus, and encouraging an increase in school lunch participation.
At Hempstead Elementary School, the grade level with the most participation for the week will be able to win an ice cream party provided by SFE. It must be a reimbursable meal to qualify for the contest. We will have posters up for each grade and numbers will be updated daily.
During the week, students at Hempstead High School and Hempstead Middle School will be given a ticket for every reimbursable meal they receive during lunch. They will drop the tickets into a box according to their school. At the end of the week, there will be a drawing for prizes. Two winners for Middle School and two winners for High School will be drawn. Please advise that students MUST have their ticket in order to claim the prize. Winners will be announced the following Monday.
Posters and flyers will be posted at all campuses to market NSLW. Announcements will be made during the week to inform students. Please encourage students to eat breakfast and lunch every day.
