The Hempstead ISD Board of Trustees met on Monday, September 19. 

Before the start of the Sept. 19 Board meeting, students from Hempstead Middle School led the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance and the Pledge to the Texas Flag. The students who led the Pledges were: Tristan Allen, Audrey Mewis, and Jayson Mewis. During the board meeting, Hempstead ISD Superintendent Herbert O’Neil recognized several students and staff. 

Students Recognized  

Seven Hempstead High School welding students received their welding certifications at the end of the 2021-2022 school year. The students received an AWS D1.1 or AWS D9.1 welding certificate from the American Welding Society. Students become certified by a successful visual and X-ray inspection. Receiving this certification means the welding students could perform a specific type of welding process for companies and welding shops within the workforce.

Superintendent O’Neil recently created a Superintendent Bobcat Advisory Council. The council is made up of Hempstead High School students in Grades 9-12 Grade. Students are nominated by their principal and meet monthly with the Superintendent of Schools to discuss campus initiatives and district happenings. Several of the students were present during the board meeting and represented the Superintendent’s Bobcat Advisory Council for the first time. 

Bobcat Advisory Council Members are Marriah Trujillo, Hayden Payne, She'quera Wolfe-George, Victor Grijalva Tinajero, Andrew Salinas, Jasmine Rodriguez Santos, Kewaylon Wilson, Anna Brandt, Haley Herbert, Delia Ward, Jarrick Gurrola, And Jacob Butler.

Fall sports student-athletes Bhia’nay Martinez, Cross Country; Haley Herbert, Volleyball Captain; and Camani Kilpatrick, Football Captain were recognized at the board meeting. Each student introduced themselves and invited the School Board to their next athletic event. 

Employees Recognized

Superintendent O’Neil named Hempstead High School Special Education Department Chair and Higher Heights Hospitality Chair, Stephanie Prince, the Superintendent’s Higher Heights award recipient of the month. Prince explained that it is a joy to serve her campus and her students and colleagues each and every day. She was honored and received a plaque for her dedication and service to the students and staff in Hempstead ISD. 

Hempstead Middle School principal, Dr. Rhonda Smith, recognized 6th Grade science teacher, Willie Williams, as the September HMS Teacher of the Month.

Trustees Approve Action Items

During the September 19 Board meeting, Hempstead ISD Trustees approved the following action items:

  • Approved Resolution regarding the Extracurricular Status of the Waller County Texas 4-H Organization.

  • Approved an Adjunct Faculty Agreement with Texas AgriLife Extension Service and Cooperative Extension Program for the 2022-2023 school year.

  • Approved a Resolution declaring official intent to reimburse certain expenditures.

  • Approved Budget Amendment #1.

  • Approved the A/C Replacement Project at Hempstead Elementary for the Big Bobcat Building Areas A & B with the use of ESSER II Funds.  

New Hires

During the meeting, Director of Human Resources, MaBisha Stubblefield announced new hires.

  • Brittany Anderson was named Assistant Superintendent of Learning and Leading. 

  • Jaylon Harris was named 7th Grade Math Teacher at Hempstead Middle School.

  • Rebecca Lopez was named Pre-Kindergarten Teacher at Hempstead Early Childhood Center. 

The October Board meeting will be held on Monday, Oct. 17, and will begin at 6 p.m. in the Administration Building Board Room.
