Band playing instruments on football field

The Hempstead High School Bobcat Band is preparing to compete in contest season. Bands usually begin preparing for contest season during summer band camp.

The Bobcat Band kicked off preparation on August 1, 2022. The band produces music and marching sets to prepare for the contest season. The students have been practicing every day before school, during the school day, and for two hours on Monday evenings.

“The band is smaller this year but the students are improving each week,” Hempstead ISD Director of Bands, Ronald Walker said. “This will give our band a slight edge over last year's band. Although we have lost some key instruments this year, our students are working hard to cover all of the parts in the music with fewer players.”

Walker explained that the judges will specifically be looking for marching precision and music quality.

The students are excited and ready to take on their competition on the field. Their core style of marching will be accompanied by the Hempstead High School color guard.

“The color guard adds a nice visual component to the show.”
