Finding Your Purpose in Your Passion
Hempstead Independent School District is happy to recognize Johnny Holland (‘83) as the February Bobcat Trailblazer of the Month.
Holland’s humble beginnings in Hempstead, Texas have led him all the way to San Francisco. The 49ers coach and former NFL player is a man of many talents. Holland was more than just an athlete. During his time at HHS, Holland was an active member of the National Honor Society, was involved in the DECA program, and he graduated in the top ten in his class. He excelled in sports during his secondary years, playing football and basketball, and was also involved in track and baseball during his earlier years.
Holland spoke fondly of his time in Hempstead and the impact it had on him.
"Growing up in Hempstead, I never had the opportunity to be around professional football players or coaches. Playing professional ball was a far-fetched dream for me," he said. "But I had so much community support in Hempstead, from little league baseball to my teachers and coaches. All of that support made me who I am today."
After graduating from HHS in 1983, Holland went on to play college football at Texas A&M University on a scholarship. He eventually got drafted in the second round of the NFL draft and played for the Green Bay Packers for seven years before retiring. Holland then returned to Green Bay as a coach. 28 years later he has been afforded the opportunity to coach several NFL teams and he is now with linebacker coach for the San Francisco 49ers.
When asked about the people who impacted him the most in his life, Holland credited his parents and siblings. "My mom and dad didn't graduate from high school, but they pushed academics in our home," he said. "They worked hard every day, and they encouraged us to be the best we could be in whatever we did. They didn't believe in quitters." Holland, the youngest of eight children, also praised his siblings for pushing him to be his best. His siblings went to college to become engineers and they kept him motivated to continue to keep academics first and excel in school.
Reflecting on his success after high school, Holland attributed it to finding his purpose and taking advantage of opportunities when they came. "Finding your purpose and dedicating yourself to something that you love is one of the most important things you can do," he said.
Holland had some advice for the young students at Hempstead High School who are sitting where he was many years ago. “I want to encourage kids and let them know that the sky is the limit. Things will work out, but you must be prepared to make things happen. Success is not always a big job or making it to the NFL to be a player or a coach, those are not the only things that make you successful. Fulfilling the purpose for our lives and figuring out what your purpose is, makes you successful.”
Currently, Holland is living his dream and has found his purpose in motivating and encouraging young men in the league. “I cherish the moments I can share with young players about being a father and a husband, being financially responsible, giving back to the community, lifting up others, and not forgetting where you come from. I love to see athletes be well-rounded, successful, and encouraging others to follow their dreams."
Holland's success in life and his dedication to uplifting others is what earned him the Bobcat Trailblazer of the Month award. He is a testament to the importance of hard work and dedication.
