New HISD & PVAMU Partnership Opens Doors for Future Educators and Administrators

Are you interested in exploring a teaching career in Hempstead ISD or becoming an educational principal or administrator? Discover your pathway to teaching and education administration in Hempstead.

Hempstead Independent School District is excited to launch a new “Grow Your Own” program in partnership with Prairie View A&M University and the Texas A&M College System.

Last year, the PVAMU Whitlowe R Green College of Education received a $6.1 million grant from the US Department of Education to help fund the LEADERS program. The program will help Hempstead ISD address staffing shortages and empower staff interested in becoming teachers and future administrators to better meet the needs of the students.

The partnership is set to provide unique opportunities for professional development and growth to the district's staff and students through various programs. Hempstead ISD will offer three different tracks to help interested candidates further their careers in education.

The following LEADERS programs will be available to eligible candidates:

Panther Teacher Residency

The Panther Teacher Residency program is a paid residency that offers candidates an opportunity to become certified teachers and complete student teaching in Hempstead ISD. Students will attend classes through Prairie View A&M University and gain a full year of hands-on classroom experience before graduation, to help transition into full-time classroom teachers.

Panther Teacher Education Residency Model (PTERM)

The Panther Teacher Education Residency Model is designed for candidates who have a bachelor’s or master’s degree, and who aspire to become certified teachers. PTERM is an alternative certification program open to anyone who currently holds a bachelor’s degree. Participants will receive on-the-job training and support from experienced mentor teachers and engage in rigorous coursework that prepares them to become effective and knowledgeable educators. Upon completion, participants will receive a master's in education.

Bobcat LEADERS

The Bobcat LEADERS program will offer current Hempstead ISD certified teaching staff an opportunity to participate in an administrator residency program. This program will help aspiring administrators receive a Master of Education in Educational Administration. Participants engage in rigorous coursework, workshops, and coaching sessions and are paired with experienced mentors to support them throughout their journey.

Hempstead ISD will host interest meetings for each program track April 3-5, at the Hempstead ISD Administration Building, 1440 13th St.

  • Panther Teacher Residency - Monday, April 3 | 4 to 5 p.m.

  • Panther Teacher Education Residency Model (PTERM) - Tuesday, April 4 | 4 to 5 p.m.

  • Bobcat LEADERS - Wednesday, April 5 | 4-5 p.m.
