Over 100 students from nine schools across the region came together to showcase their investment skills at the Prairie View A&M University Young Investor Symposium on March 4. Students from Waller ISD, A&M Consolidated, St. Thomas, College Station High School, Caney Creek High School, Young Women's College Prep Academy, Bryan High School, and Cypress Ranch High School participated.
The Young Investor Symposium provided an opportunity for high school students to learn about the world of finance and investing while also giving them a chance to apply their knowledge to a real-world scenario. Participants formed teams of up to four students and were tasked with managing a virtual $100,000 portfolio of stocks, bonds, and mutual funds.
The students were judged on the performance of their portfolios and the quality of their investment strategies, with the top three teams receiving cash prizes. Hempstead High School received second place in the competition.
“This experience gave me the opportunity to grow in my understanding of stocks, trades, and EFT,” Aaron Morales, Hempstead High School senior, said. “I learned how to gain capital over the last quarter and even helped me learn the importance of the volatility of stocks during the experience. It was also fun to diversify and to see how the stocks of America change constantly and keep you on your toes.”
Overall, the Prairie View A&M University Young Investor Symposium brought together talented students from across the region and provided them with an opportunity to develop their investment skills.
Congratulations to the members of Team "Rocking Stock" seniors Jacob Butler, Aaron Morales, and Alexis Munoz. The prize was an $800 Amazon Gift card split between the students.
