HHS Summer Welding Interns at Blinn College

Hempstead Independent School District has taken a significant step towards preparing its high school students for promising careers in the field of welding. Thanks to the generous funding from the 2023 Summer Career and Technical Education (CTE) Grant provided by the Texas Education Agency (TEA), Hempstead ISD held a successful transformative summer program for students. This initiative allowed 14 enthusiastic students to participate in CTE coursework and earn welding certifications, setting them on a path toward greater opportunities in the future.

This year was the first time the District received the prestigious grant. The grant was divided into two parts: Part 1 focused on funding CTE coursework with an allocation of $30,000, and Part 2 included a $43,000 investment that sponsored an internship program. This combined effort paved the way for a unique educational experience that made a significant impact on the participating students.

Throughout the intensive four-week program, these aspiring welders showed their dedication and determination to master the skills and knowledge required in the welding industry. Under the guidance of Blinn College staff and the supervision of Hempstead ISD Welding Teacher, Isaiah Madison, the students completed comprehensive training that covered essential aspects of welding. From safety protocols and construction tool utilization to precise measurement techniques and cutting practices, the students received a well-rounded education in the fundamentals of welding.

One of the program's key highlights was the successful attainment of the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) Core certification. Thirteen students earned their certifications, a testament to their commitment and hard work.

The students earned high school credits for completing the "Intro to Welding" course. These credits will not only contribute to their graduation requirements but also set them on the path toward future success in the welding industry. The student's achievement in this course will help them earn a full College, Career, and Military Readiness (CCMR) point. To achieve this milestone, the students need to complete Welding 1 and obtain an approved industry-based certification, demonstrating their proficiency and dedication in their chosen career pathway.

Hempstead ISD's program has placed a strong emphasis on providing students with a comprehensive education that goes beyond certification attainment.

Hempstead ISD facilitated the transportation of students to and from Blinn College. The support and collaboration between Hempstead ISD and Blinn College ensured a seamless and productive learning environment for the students.

The student's enthusiasm and dedication have not gone unnoticed, as three of the participants have opted to further develop their skills by joining the Welding and Maintenance internship program throughout July. This additional opportunity will allow these young welders to gain real-world experience, hone their craft, and build connections within the industry, setting them up for successful careers after graduation.

Hempstead ISD is shaping the leaders and workforce of tomorrow, by providing students with access to innovative programs and opportunities.
