Delarrin Turner-Yell and his mom at the Bobcat football game

In the world of professional sports, there's something undeniably special about athletes who return to their roots and support the communities that shaped them.

Delarrin Turner-Yell, a proud alumnus of Hempstead High School, has exemplified this sentiment in his remarkable journey from the halls of his alma mater to the grand stage of the National Football League (NFL).

Now in his second season with the Denver Broncos,  he made a visit to Hempstead High School’s Bobcat Stadium to watch his former football team's first home game on Friday, September 1.

From Humble Beginnings to NFL Stardom

Turner-Yell's story is one of perseverance, hard work, and unyielding determination. Growing up, he watched his mother, who handled life's difficulties with unwavering grace, making a way out of seemingly impossible situations. It was in those trying times that Turner-Yell's dreams began to take shape.

He dreamt of leaving Hempstead to achieve something remarkable. One of his sources of inspiration during those formative years was his cousin, Terrance Toliver, who pursued his own dreams on and off the football field. Turner-Yell looked up to him, admiring how he paved his own way and carved a path to success. These early influences instilled in him the importance of hard work and dedication in the pursuit of one's dreams.

The College Experience and Transition to the NFL

Turner-Yell's journey from Hempstead High School to the NFL was not without its challenges. Coming from a smaller football program and playing at the 2A and 3A levels, he faced a significant learning curve when transitioning to college football, where he competed against some of the top athletes in the country.

However, he carried with him the lessons and values he had learned at home, understanding that hard work and commitment transcended the level of competition.

During his college years, he encountered a pivotal moment when he was thrust into a starting role as a sophomore at the University of Oklahoma. While it presented its own set of challenges, he adapted and grew into his new role. In his junior and senior years, he caught the attention of NFL scouts, proving that with dedication dreams can become a reality.

Advice for Aspiring Student-Athletes

For young, aspiring student-athletes with dreams of making it professionally, Turner-Yell offers invaluable advice: Believe in yourself.  He encourages students not to be discouraged by negative thoughts or comments.

He emphasized the importance of creating good habits early on, both on and off the field. This includes maintaining a healthy lifestyle through proper nutrition, strengthening your body, and getting adequate rest. He believes these habits, can give aspiring athletes a significant advantage in their pursuit of success.

The Lessons of the NFL Journey

Turner-Yell's time in the NFL has taught him that success is a daily competition and grind. In a league where only 53 players make the roster, he acknowledges that there are cuts every year, and that staying on requires consistent hard work and dedication. He understands that being essential and contributing on and off the field is just as vital as any other job, reinforcing the importance of character and integrity.

Staying Connected to Alma Mater and Community

Even with the demands of an NFL career, Turner-Yell remains connected to his alma mater and community. He recognizes the importance of giving back and being available to support the next generation. Whether through phone calls with family or offering assistance via social media, he finds ways to stay involved and inspire the community that played a crucial role in shaping him.

His return to his alma mater is a reminder that dreams are attainable, and with hard work and determination, anyone can rise to greatness and come back to uplift those who supported them along the way.
