During the February school board meeting, Sarah Montes, assistant principal at Hempstead Elementary School, was recognized as the recipient of the Superintendent's Higher Heights Award. The award celebrates her outstanding contributions to education, her commitment to student growth, and her positive impact on the school community.

Montes has been an integral part of Hempstead ISD for the past three years, bringing with her a wealth of experience and passion for bilingual education. She embraces the challenge of creating meaningful learning experiences for each student.

"This looks different with each student, and I enjoy the challenge of making learning meaningful and fun at the same time," Montes shared. "I feel strongly about instilling pride in our students of their bilingualism and culture, and guiding them to use their unique skills to better their school and community."

Montes began her teaching career eleven years ago as a bilingual kindergarten teacher in Bryan, TX. Over the years, she has developed strong relationships with students, their families, and colleagues, emphasizing the importance of finding common ground and connections to create a safe and thriving learning environment.

In the face of the challenges public education has experienced in recent years, Montes remains committed to focusing on the big picture.

"Focusing on the big picture and the importance of what we do helps me overcome the difficult days that inevitably happen," she explained. "As long as I'm operating according to my morals and trying to do what's best for students and staff, I feel that it is worth my effort to remain in public education and affect as many young lives as possible."

Montes finds joy in her work by witnessing the academic and personal growth of students. She believes in the power of public education, the importance of literacy, and the strength of bilingualism, considering these as her life's work and contribution to society.

“Seeing students grow academically improves their confidence is my favorite part of the job.”

As an assistant principal, Montes wears many hats, describing herself as a "jack-of-all-trades." Her specialization in working with bilingual students sets her apart, ensuring they receive the support they need, and she takes pride in connecting with their families and making them feel heard and involved.

Montes credits her mother, a retired public school teacher, as a significant influence in her life, inspiring her to pursue a career in education. "Growing up, it was impossible to ignore the value of someone like that in our community, and I wanted to have the same positive influence on kids," she shared.

"I'm honored to receive this award and grateful that someone noticed the effort and care I put into my work at HES.”

Through her dedication and passion, Sarah Montes continues to make a lasting impact on the students and community of Hempstead ISD.
