Coordinator of Elementary Education, Laura Mewis, has been named the April Superintendent's Higher Heights Award recipient. With 27 years of service in Hempstead ISD, Mewis' passion and commitment to students and teachers are evident.
Mewis has dedicated 30 years to the field of education, including her early days as a long-term substitute. Starting her journey immediately after high school graduation, she became an instructional aide for Pre-K, setting the foundation for her career in education.
Her passion for her work stems from her belief in the importance of educating future generations. Mewis finds helping students prepare to achieve their dreams, emphasizing the value of curiosity and a constant eagerness to explore new ideas and perspectives rewarding.
Building strong relationships is her secret to success. She connects with students, their families, and her colleagues by showing genuine interest in their feelings, validating their opinions, and recognizing that everyone has strengths others can learn from.
Her favorite aspect of the job is its ever-evolving nature, driven by changes in state law. This continuous evolution allows her to grow as a leader and a lifelong learner.
Mewis acknowledged that her work's uniqueness is driven by her collaboration with educators across all four campuses. Her inspiration comes from Patricia Brown-Dever, who recognized her potential early on and instilled in her the belief that caring deeply can make a significant impact. This guidance has shaped Mewis' approach, ensuring every student and staff member feels seen and appreciated.
Throughout her career, Mewis has cultivated an enduring sense of curiosity, always eager to explore new ideas and perspectives. She remains committed to learning from others, asking questions, and seeking new information, believing in the potential of the community, students, and staff.
Beyond her professional role models, Mewis draws inspiration from her parents. Her father taught her that failure is not an option, while her mother, who served as an instructional aide for Hempstead ISD for 25 years, demonstrated the importance of multitasking, solution-oriented thinking, and considering all perspectives before making decisions.
Her recognition as the April Superintendent's Higher Heights Award recipient highlights the significant impact she has made and continues to make in Hempstead ISD.
