With over 25 years in education, Hempstead ISD Elementary District Teacher of the Year, LaInthia Stubblefield's journey to becoming Hempstead Elementary’s 2024 Teacher of the Year is a story of dedication and unwavering belief in her students. Her passion for teaching began with humble roots and a pivotal moment that changed the trajectory of her career forever.

Stubblefield’s path to teaching didn’t begin in the classroom. After graduating high school, she worked as a filing clerk at a home health agency. Although content with the job she decided it was time for a change. She resigned from her job and started substitute teaching, eventually taking on a full-time paraprofessional role working with a student with autism. She grew close to this student and their family during this time. She saw something in this student that others didn’t. This opportunity inspired her and she began her pursuit of becoming an educator. Stubblefield enrolled at Prairie View A&M University in the Fall of 2000. 25 years later she still keeps in touch with the student’s family who inspired her career change.

For Stubblefield, one of the most powerful moments in her career came about more than 10 years ago when she was teaching a resource class. Several students in her class had behavior challenges, but by the end of the year, they all passed their TAKS test. “They knew my expectations and performed well because I believed in their abilities,” Stubblefield explained. Her approach was simple but impactful. “I know that standardized test results do not define students and what they are capable of, but I won’t accept anything less than their personal best on anything they do.” This philosophy has shaped not only her teaching style but also the relationships she builds with her students.

A key to Stubblefield’s classroom success is her ability to keep students motivated through hands-on learning. Her “Fun Fridays,” where students participate in activities like recipes, crafts, and science experiments, are a highlight of her weekly routine. Fun Fridays are earned, not guaranteed. “They have to earn it,” she explains. “The science experiment is for everyone, but the recipe and craft are non-negotiable if not earned.”

In addition to Fun Fridays, Stubblefield incorporates reinforcement techniques, often using small incentives to keep students focused and engaged in learning.

Beyond the classroom, Stubblefield’s influence extends throughout Hempstead Elementary and the community. Two years ago, she led an arts and crafts club in a service project for Texas Children’s Hospital, creating Christmas items and cards for children in the hospital. She’s also been instrumental in welcoming staff back to school by decorating the cafeteria and organizing back-to-school t-shirts and luncheons.

“I am a ‘behind the scenes’ type of person, but I like to make people feel appreciated,” she shared. Whether it’s leading the Black History Program or organizing morale-boosting treats for her colleagues, Stubblefield’s positive energy is felt by everyone around her.

This year, Stubblefield has taken on the dual role of teaching both Life Skills and Resource classes. The challenge of preparing for multiple grade levels in different subjects is significant, but she’s adapted by using her conference time for planning. “I stay late and work on the weekends,” she explained. “I will do whatever is necessary to ensure that my students are successful.”

Being named Hempstead Elementary’s 2024 Teacher of the Year is a milestone Stubblefield dreamed about years ago when she first began her teaching journey.

“As I walked the hallways at Region 4 during a professional development training, I saw pictures of the previous Teachers of the Year and thought, my picture will hang in this building one day. And to God be all the glory, it has come to pass.”

Her advice for new teachers is rooted in passion and purpose. “In this profession, you must choose it for the outcome, not the income. Get to know the students and their families for yourself. And always Q-TIP—Quit Taking It Personal.”

With her dedication, belief in her students, and strong connection to her community, LaInthia Stubblefield is truly making a difference in the lives of the students she serves.

"I’m just a small-town teacher with the desire to make a huge difference in the community where I grew up!"
