Hempstead Middle School math teacher Karen Peyton was recently selected to present her innovative teaching strategies at the Region 4 Education Service Center, where she shared insights on creating a culture of success in the math classroom. Her presentation, titled "Creating a Culture of Success," focused on engaging students daily through structured routines that encourage active participation, ownership of learning, and data-driven growth.
Peyton’s session addressed a common challenge among educators: engaging every student every day. Her approach emphasizes building student agency through accessible routines, and it has significantly impacted student achievement in her classroom.
In Peyton’s class, students develop writing skills while integrating math concepts into their observations. The discussions often extend beyond math, incorporating science, history, and real-world experiences. Peyton demonstrated how she guides students to connect their observations to math vocabulary and concepts related to the day’s lesson.
She showcased examples of student responses, highlighting how structured questioning and encouragement lead to deeper mathematical thinking and improved communication skills. Peyton also shared how she utilizes data to monitor student progress and reteach key Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS).
Peyton’s journey to presenting at Region 4 was encouraged by HMS Region 4 Math Specialist Sana Brennan, who had long recognized her classroom’s success. With Brennan’s support, Peyton reflected on her teaching methods, ultimately creating a presentation that resonated with fellow educators.
Karen Peyton’s commitment to fostering a culture of success in her classroom has not only transformed her students’ learning experiences but has also inspired fellow educators across the greater Houston area.
