HES Kindergarten Para Honored with Title III Symposium Spirit Award

On Wednesday, May 24, Yazmin San Miguel, a dedicated kindergarten paraprofessional at Hempstead Elementary School, was surprised by Texas Education Agency (TEA) representatives, Superintendent O’Neil, and her campus leadership team.

San Miguel was nominated and chosen for the Hybrid Title III Symposium Spirit Award. The award recognizes the exceptional contribution of any paraprofessional or support staff currently working in a Title III-funded school, specifically for their support to emergent bilingual students.

The nomination came as a surprise to Ms. San Miguel when Assistant Principal Sarah Montes put her name forward for the award. According to Montes, “Ms. San Miguel has gone above and beyond her duties, stepping into the role of a 1st-grade teacher throughout the year to provide the best possible support for emergent bilingual students.” “Her dedication, passion, and commitment have made a significant impact on the students and the school community as a whole.”

San Miguel was asked to step into the role of teacher, due to a unfilled teacher vacancy. Montes explained that she has been an exceptional asset to the school.

"Her ability to jump in and fulfill a teaching role is a testament to her commitment and genuine care for the students,” Superintendent Herbert O’Neil expressed. “ I am delighted that she is being recognized for her outstanding efforts."

San Miguel, overwhelmed with joy and gratitude, expressed her deep appreciation for the recognition. "I am humbled and honored to receive this award. Working with my students and witnessing their progress has been incredibly rewarding. I am grateful for the opportunity to make a positive impact on their lives," she shared.

San Miguel will be officially recognized at the upcoming 2023 Title III Symposium, which will take place July 17- 18 in San Antonio, Texas. The symposium is a platform where educators, administrators, and support staff gather to exchange ideas, share best practices, and discuss strategies for supporting emergent bilingual students.
