HHS students talking with college and career reps

More than 50 colleges, universities, military, and trade school representatives filled the Hempstead High School practice gym to meet with Hempstead High School students at the College and Career Fair, held on October 4.

Students had the opportunity to speak with various representatives about post-secondary options. Students moved from table to table, collecting brochures, college swag, and advice on application procedures and what post-high school could look like for them. In addition to the colleges and universities, there were representatives present to talk about scholarship and financial aid information.

Alejandra Valoe, a senior student, was excited about the opportunity to speak with representatives who could talk about the programs she was interested in. Valoe recently began talking about college and was initially doubtful about college being a postsecondary option for her.

“Although I have been on a few local field trips to tour colleges with the school, I wasn’t sure that college would be an option for me,” Valoe said. “After visiting the college fair I feel more interested in other universities that I had not thought about before.”

Valoe has applied to college and plans to major in business.

“My advice to other students is to research the opportunities available for the major you wish to study. Reach out to your counselors and other students thinking about college. The research process will help guide you to the schools and programs that are right for you.”

The Hempstead High School counseling department plans to host more College & Career events throughout the school year.
