LaKesha Morgan, Hempstead High School assistant principal, exudes Bobcat spirit. Since joining Hempstead High School this summer, she has dedicated her time and energy to building a culture of positivity and pride across the campus.
“Mrs. Morgan has brought so much pride and spirit to Hempstead High School and most importantly, to the entire district,” Hempstead High School principal, Samantha Mullens, said. “Her vision and determination are efficacious, and we have been blessed to have someone of her caliber join Bobcat Nation.”
Morgan is extremely passionate about students, especially those students who people might look over.
“I grew up very similar to our students and I aspire to be a change agent for them so that they can see an example of what their future can be,” Morgan said. “I want them to see that if I could do it, they can do it.”
Developing relationships with high school students is not easy, but Morgan says it’s all about trust.
“You have to take the time to get to know your students. Having conversations with them before or after school, and during lunch is a great way to begin developing those connections. You have to be genuine and show up for them. When you support your students and make yourself visible, you will build strong relationships.”
Since the beginning of the school year, Morgan has been a cheerleader for the students of Hempstead High School. This year, she has created new opportunities for students to learn and grow, she has hosted dynamic pep rallies, and she even started a campus step team.
“The students at Hempstead High School are my why,” Morgan explained. “I know that I am here to make a difference in their lives each and every day. It is our job to continue to be a beacon of light and hope for them.”
As a campus administrator, Morgan believes it is important to not only empower students but to also empower the teachers on her campus.
“I remember what it is like to be in the classroom, so I try to offer the support I wanted back then. I enjoy going into classrooms often to offer coaching and support to ensure the teachers on my campus become successful. My goal is to share the wisdom that I have to push them to be the best they can be.”
Watching students who are considered to be the underdog win is Morgan’s favorite part about being an educator.
“When that lightbulb comes on and they graduate, we all win in education. My hope is that they can move forward through life and share the same care and wisdom they received with many others.”
Educators can have a long-lasting impact on students years after graduation. Morgan’s story is no different. Her journey into education started with two of her childhood teachers, who planted the seed in her to become a teacher. Her former English teacher, Donna Williams’, strength, grit, and tenacity continue to encourage her. However, it was her seventh-grade teacher, Ms. Rose Ann Miller, who first spoke to her about being an educator.
“Ms. Miller’s joy for teaching touched my heart and we are still close.”
There are also some people who are a part of your journey and don’t even know it. One of those educational leaders for Morgan is Aldine ISD Superintendent, Dr. LaTonya M. Goffney.
“Although I haven’t had an opportunity to meet Dr. Goffney, I have been watching her work and leadership over the years. Her story is inspiring and she was the one who inspired me to get my Superintendent certification.”
Morgan hopes that she too can continue to be a light and inspire others.
“I truly believe that I was placed in Hempstead for a reason and while I am here I am going to do my best to follow the vision to take our students to higher heights. I am excited to continue building relationships and partnerships within the community. I am committed to positive change for the students and staff of Hempstead ISD.”
