The start of the year was an inspiring one for Hempstead High School students as they welcomed Gospel Recording Artist Dr. James Mable Jr. to their auditorium. Mable shared his personal journey of perseverance and determination, inspiring students to strive for excellence in their own lives.
The Navasota native shared how a devastating car accident at the age of 27 changed his life and how he had to learn to walk again after being paralyzed. Despite this setback, Mable continued to work on his doctoral degree, never losing sight of his goals. He credited his mother, teachers, coaches, and band directors for recognizing his potential and encouraging him to pursue his dreams.
Mable emphasized the importance of academics, reminding students that they need to be prepared for opportunities when they come. He encouraged students to strive to stand out and not just follow the crowd. He also talked about his journey in teaching at Navasota ISD and Waller ISD and shared how he was twice considered for a Grammy for his music.
Hempstead High School student, Mike Steele, bravely volunteered to share his own aspirations during the event, and Mable rewarded him with a $100 gift card for being courageous. Mable reminded the students that no one will believe in them if they don’t believe in themselves and that they can rise to the top by taking care of their responsibilities, pushing themselves, and empowering themselves.
Mable’s message was a powerful one, reminding students that life is full of ups and downs and that they have to be prepared to respond to turbulence with determination and perseverance. At the end of the event, he encouraged students to respect others, take care of those who look after them, and have fun while pursuing their goals. Before leaving the stage, he inspired the students to believe in themselves, set their sights high, and strive for excellence in all areas of their lives.
