The Bobcat Alumni Trailblazer Award is a monthly recognition bestowed upon a distinguished Hempstead ISD alumnus who has made remarkable strides in their career since graduating from Hempstead High School. Berman, the recipient of the month, was interviewed about his journey and the exceptional accomplishments he has attained over the years.

Reflecting on his time in Hempstead ISD, Berman fondly recalled his formative years at the school. Despite never making the high school basketball team, he continued to pursue his love of sports. Berman's determination earned him a place on the high school tennis doubles team, where he showcased his talent and reached the city finals at district, even winning the first set. He was one win away from advancing to the semi-finals and receiving a letterman jacket.

Berman's involvement in sports extended beyond high school, as his father ran the local little league during his upbringing. He even worked at a local store, helping sell items, and would playfully pretend to be on TV, which sparked his interest in media. Following his passion, he pursued a degree in journalism from the University of Houston (UH).

After graduating from UH, Berman began his professional journey, initially securing a job in Odessa, Texas. He then transitioned to Ft. Pierce, Florida, before finding his niche in sports journalism. Berman worked at a radio station throughout his college years and further honed his skills in the industry.

In 1986, Berman joined FOX 26, where he served as the weekend sports anchor and reporter. Two years later, in 1988, he assumed the role of Sports Director, a position he has held for over three decades. Known for his ability to break news stories and deliver captivating sports coverage, Berman has consistently stayed ahead of the competition throughout his tenure at the station.

When asked about his favorite Hempstead athletes, Berman fondly reminisced about the impact of another Bobcat Alumni Trailblazer Johnny Holland. He explained, during a media day interview, Holland expressed gratitude for Berman's father, who motivated and supported him during their shared time in Hempstead. Berman emphasized the pivotal role his father played in his own life, along with the guidance of influential teachers like his Spanish and Biology teachers at Hempstead High School. Additionally, Berman credited his basketball coach, Bill Eaglan, for instilling him with discipline and determination.

On Monday, June 12, Berman officially retired as the Sports Director at FOX 26 where he has dedicated four decades of his career. His unmatched ability to obtain exclusive sports stories and deliver captivating content has solidified his reputation as one of the top sports journalists in Houston.

The Hempstead ISD community commends Berman for his exceptional accomplishments and outstanding contributions to the world of sports journalism. His trailblazing journey serves as an inspiration to current and future Bobcats, showcasing limitless possibilities.
