Hempstead Theatre Co. took center stage at the 24AAA District UIL One Act Play (OAP) contest, delivering their rendition of Peter Shaffer's acclaimed play, "Equus," on March 7. The student's theatrical performance garnered a series of awards, solidifying Hempstead High School’s reputation within the performing arts arena.
Hempstead High School receives awards in multiple categories:
All-Star Crew: Maeli Smith
Best Overall Technician: Collin Mayes
Best Technical Crew: Collin Mayes, Maeli Smith, Tanay Dalwadi, DQ Boulds
All-Star Cast: Percy Bonner-Robertson as Nugget
Best Performer: Jesus Montero-Oliva as Alan
Best Performer: Michael Steele as Dysart
These achievements recognize the cast and crew's dedication and hard work. Out of 74 performers from seven competing schools - Brazos, Hitchcock, Boling, East Bernard, Van Vleck, and Danbury - Hempstead proudly secured both of the top performer awards, which is unprecedented.
Hempstead, East Bernard, and Van Vleck emerged as the three advancing schools, securing a spot in the upcoming bi-district contest. The next leg of the competition is set to take place at Sealy High School on Saturday, March 23.
Hempstead Theatre Co. Director, Gabriel Arias, expressed immense pride in the accomplishments of his students.
"Our kids work hard, they are dedicated, and they give it their all both practice and on the main stage. We look forward to continuing to work hard to prepare for the bi-district contest. This is only the beginning."
