Hempstead hosted its first Unified Champion Field Day on April 26.
The Unified Champion program ensures all students can participate in athletic activities. Unified Sports is a program under the Special Olympics umbrella.
The district invited neighboring districts, Navaosta ISD and Royal ISD to participate. Students and staff across the district volunteered to serve as hosts and buddies during the event.
Students participated in several activities including, push-ups, shot put, long jump, softball throw, and several running events.
“This organization is near and dear to my heart,” Herbchelle Plumber, Hempstead Middle School Life Skills teacher, explained. “I wanted to facilitate a districtwide movement to provide our students of all abilities the opportunity to feel included through sports and various activities.”
Plumber explained that the Unified Sports motto, “training together and playing together is a quick path to friendship and understanding.” This is exactly what happened today in Hempstead ISD.
At the end of the event, each student received a participation ribbon.
