HHS Welding Students and Teachers

Hempstead High School students are forging paths to success thanks to a recent Welding Bootcamp designed to prepare them for industry certification exams. Led by Hempstead High School welding teacher Kenneth McCullough and James Basham, guest master welder, the intensive program provided students with critical skills, hands-on practice, and expert guidance to ensure they entered their exams confident and prepared.

The goal of the Welding Bootcamp was to equip students with the skills and certifications needed to secure competitive jobs in the workforce.

"We organized the Welding Bootcamp to help students gain a competitive edge," explained McCullough. "Partnering with Mr. Basham allowed students to gain valuable insights and final practice before their tests. It’s all about setting them up for success after high school."

Throughout the bootcamp, students focused on mastering key welding techniques, including Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) and Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), and understanding blueprints and safety protocols. These hands-on lessons not only prepared students for their certification exams but also gave them practical experience with industry-standard methods.

Earning welding certifications marks a significant milestone for these students.

“It gives them credibility with employers and often leads to higher-paying jobs right out

of high school. It also provides a strong foundation if they choose to pursue advanced certifications or a career in engineering or fabrication.”

The bootcamp was not without its challenges. Students faced long hours of practice and the need for precision in their work. Despite the obstacles, continued asking questions, seeking feedback, and learning from their mistakes. Their dedication paid off.

Among the many highlights of the bootcamp was the transformation of a student who initially doubted his abilities. After weeks of practice, he completed a near-perfect weld.

"Seeing his confidence grow and the support from his peers was a powerful reminder of the community we’re building in this program," McCullough shared.

As the students move forward with their newly earned certifications, they are ready to enter a growing field with high demand for skilled welders.

"This achievement is more than a certification; it’s a ticket to a brighter future," McCullough said. "These students have proven their dedication and skill, and I’m proud to see them take their first steps toward successful careers in welding and beyond."

The Welding Bootcamp at Hempstead High School not only highlights the value of career and technical education but it highlights the district's vision to cultivate confident learners and leaders who excel in all endeavors.
