Hempstead High School junior Damian Vega-Stephens has hit a high note in his musical journey, earning a spot in the prestigious ATSSB All-State Band.
More than 10,000 high school band students from across Texas auditioned in twenty-two different regions for a place in their respective all-region bands. The top chairs in each region advanced to one of the five area auditions held this past weekend across the state, and only 286 of these students were selected for all-state honors.
As a trombone player, his dedication and skill have placed him among the most talented high school musicians in the state. This achievement is the culmination of years of hard work, passion, and perseverance.
His musical journey began in fifth grade when he learned to read music and was introduced to the cello in an after-school music club. When he moved to Hempstead in eighth grade, there were no string instruments in the band program. With the guidance and support of his middle school band teacher, he picked up the trombone and began to master a new instrument.
Reflecting on his passion for music, Vega-Stephens shared his first memory of being exposed to musical instruments was through his great uncle.
“My great-uncle was a chemist, but his hobby was playing the piano,” Vega-Stephens said. “Watching him sparked my curiosity and inspired me to explore music.”
Years later Vega-Stephens now values the camaraderie and collaborative spirit of playing in a group. Whether it’s the excitement of football season or the focused effort of concert season, he enjoys every moment.
“Playing in the band is different from playing solo. You have to listen to others and work together to make one sound,” he said.
Learning the trombone hasn’t been without challenges.
“I never realized how technical it could be. Balancing breath, technique, and musicality takes practice. But it’s been rewarding to see my progress,” he explained.
The journey to All-State Band involved rigorous auditions, including scales and etudes, a short musical composition, evaluated anonymously by judges. After advancing through region and area competitions, he earned his place in the elite ensemble.
“When I saw my name on the list, I was surprised,” he said. “It’s a privilege to represent Hempstead High School and show that a smaller school can compete at this level.”
Vega-Stephens credits his success to his band director, Ronald Walker, who consistently pushes him to improve and play at a high level.
Music has shaped Vega-Stephens high school experience. It’s taught him discipline, teamwork, and the value of hard work. Although he plans to major in mechanical engineering after graduation, he hopes to continue playing music in college and possibly pursue a double major in music education.
For younger students considering band, Vega-Stephens advises them to “Stick with it, even when it’s challenging. The process of learning an instrument is rewarding, and playing music with friends is a good experience.”
As he prepares to perform with the All-State Band in February, his achievement serves as an inspiration to his peers.
The ATSSB All-State Bands will present a concert beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 15, 2025, in the Lila Cockrell Theatre of the Henry B. Gonzales Convention Center in downtown San Antonio.
