Hempstead ISD is proud to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 - October 15. Throughout the month the district will take time to celebrate the rich culture, history, and many contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.
Samuel Herrera, HMS student
What is your favorite tradition?
My favorite Hispanic tradition is Loteria. I enjoy playing loteria with my entire family. Loteria is fast-paced and you have to be quick. The game is similar to bingo and pretty easy to catch on.
Loteria is a popular game in many Hispanic cultures. It is often played with family and friends, and it can be a fun and social way to spend time together. The game is similar to bingo but uses images or symbols on the cards instead of numbers. Each player has a Loteria card with a grid of pictures, and a caller draws cards with corresponding images and calls them out. Players mark their cards when the called image matches the one on their card. The first one to complete a row, column, or the entire card shouts "Loteria!" and wins the game.
Herrera explained that he usually does not win, when playing with his family but he still has a good time.
āItās really just a game of chance,ā Herrera said. āThe most important part is sitting down with family and talking for hours. It brings us closer together.ā
