Bond Thank You

Hempstead voters approved both propositions totaling $45.7 million during the May 4 election. It has been 18 years since Hempstead ISD passed a bond referendum.

Hempstead ISD Superintendent Herbert Oā€™Neil thanked the community for its support.

ā€œThe community of Hempstead has spoken, and both propositions A and B were approved,ā€ Oā€™Neil said. ā€œIā€™m grateful for everyone who has supported our students and schools in a big way. Thank you to everyone who shared our message and participated in the voting process. As we go to Higher Heights, this marks another step forward for Hempstead ISD.ā€

The 2024 school bondā€™s focus is on safety and security, aging facilities, and infrastructure, divided into two propositions.

Safety, Security and Functionality

Proposition A will provide a replacement campus for Hempstead Early Childhood Center, at a site to be determined, a cafeteria and band hall addition at Hempstead High School, an auxiliary gym addition at Hempstead Middle School, an enclosed connector from the cafeteria/band hall to Hempstead Middle School and between all four buildings at Hempstead Elementary School, concession/restroom building at baseball field, HVAC unit replacements, control upgrades, testing & balance districtwide, and a roof replacement at Hempstead Middle School at a cost of $42,320,000.

Proposition B will provide a new synthetic turf field and track at Bobcat Stadium at a cost of $3,400,000.

Whatā€™s Next?

ā€œWe brought the community together to determine what they thought was most important during Long-Range Facility Planning,ā€ Superintendent Oā€™Neil said. ā€œNow we will embark on a new journey together as a community.

The May 2024 bond proposal was based on a recommendation from the Long-Range Facilities Planning Committee, made up of parents, students, staff, and community members. These community members met over several months in the fall of 2023 to review the aging conditions of district facilities, district finances and toured each district campus to help develop and prioritize the list of projects that are included in the bond.

Hempstead ISD will inform the community as the work unfolds on the two propositions. All updates and information can be found on the Hempstead ISD Bond webpage at hempsteadisd.org/bond2024
